ASCENT Fire Department Assessment Centers & Training LLC (ASCENT FD ACT) provides professionally developed, customized written promotional examinations designed specifically for the fire service. Our testing services help departments evaluate the knowledge, technical competencies, and professional understanding required of today's fire officers and organizational leaders.

Recognizing that every fire department operates within its own policies, procedures, and organizational expectations, ASCENT develops examinations tailored to your department's selected reference materials and promotional requirements. Our goal is to provide an objective, consistent, and professionally documented testing process that supports fair, transparent, and defensible promotional decisions.

Customized Examination Development

ASCENT's written promotional examinations consist of a maximum of 150 multiple-choice questions, developed from department-approved reference materials. Departments may select up to five sources from the listed items below within our standard examination package, with additional sources available for greater customization.

Approved reference materials may include:

  • Published textbooks: Fire service publications and professional reference materials, including ISBN-identified textbooks currently available for purchase.

  • Departmental SOPs/SOGs: Standard operating procedures and guidelines reflecting your department's operational practices and expectations.

  • Operational protocols: Department-approved emergency response, EMS, incident command, and other operational protocols.

  • Additional written references: Approved policies, administrative directives, training manuals, and other relevant materials.

This flexibility allows departments to evaluate candidates on nationally recognized fire service principles while incorporating the local knowledge and operational expectations essential to their organization.

Professional Administration & Objective Scoring

ASCENT provides secure, professional on-site examination administration and proctoring to maintain examination integrity and consistent testing conditions.

Our standardized scoring process provides objective candidate results, clear documentation, and reliable comparisons of demonstrated knowledge. Results are typically available the same day as testing, allowing departments to move efficiently into subsequent phases of their promotional process.

Flexible Testing Options

ASCENT's written testing services may be provided independently or integrated into a larger promotional evaluation process.

Departments may use written examinations as a standalone measure of candidate knowledge, as an initial screening tool, or in conjunction with ASCENT's Basic or Comprehensive Assessment Centers.

This flexibility allows each department to establish a promotional process that reflects its staffing needs, organizational priorities, and available resources.

Transparent, Cost-Effective Pricing

Our written promotional testing services feature straightforward pricing:

  • Standard 150-question examination: $1,050, including up to five department-selected reference sources. 

  • Additional reference sources: $100 per source beyond the five included. 

  • Candidate administration fee: $10 per candidate, waived when written testing is combined with an ASCENT Comprehensive Assessment Center.

  • No per-question development fees.
